CMS HUMANITIES 8th Grade

Page history last edited by Julia Melloni 2 days, 12 hours ago

Welcome to the start of the 2011 - 2012 School Year!

Homework for 8th Grade Humanities    Every Wednesday: Find a Current Events article to bring in on Thursday for discussion!

This week we reviewed several ways for us to interact as a learning community and how we will be engaging in technology as 21st Century learners. Our class is Humanities and we will be integrating language arts and social studies. We already had a couple of opportunities for free writes and these writing practices will be part of our regular routine. You may look forward to using Google Earth, Glogster, YWP and many other web 2.0 applications. We use AR quizzes to enrich our reading strategies and comprehension.

This is our Wiki and our daily Agenda will be posted here. Lessons and homework as well as video can be accessed here so that you can rewatch and practice at your own pace.

Thanks! I look forward to having a great year with all of you, Ms. Melloni

Well come back students! Hope you had a good weekend. We can a few things to finish up on our Response to Informational Text. I was impressed with your work and student led idea on fashion show.  Your evidence of the Big Idea being:  It takes a creative mind to Invent, and problems motivate us to Invent and mistakes are sometimes the best Inventions - were awesome ideas that you then backed up with exact quotes from the article. Such as the daydreaming connection of creating an ipod, the problme solving of creating a pencil, and the failure example of the not so sticky glue make the sticky note! Well done!

Personal connections I heard were

  • Flatbread was a mistake because the baker forgot to add yeast. Now I love flatbread pizza.
  • My hair is curly and I want it to be straiht so I use a hair straightner.
  • I wanted to create a place to keep my money safe, so I invented an aerosol can magnetic safe.

We will take these ideas and type the Response to Informational Text and incorporate our group work in to a polished written piece.

Agenda:

Friday, December 2, 2011

The Pea Coat was issued in the 1720's to U.S. and European navies as a warm, wool outer coat.

1720's not quite soon enough to be worn in Salem for the Witch Hunts of the 1692!

Pea coats are characterized by broad lapels, double-breasted fronts, often large wooden or metal buttons, and vertical or slash pockets. References to the pea jacket appear in American newspapers at least as early as the 1720s, and modern renditions still maintain the original design and composition.

Inventions Connection: The pea coat is an invention, wool is an invention and buttons are an invention. Let's do quick lightening share on favorite inventions or an invention you are working on.

  • Writing On Demand: Group Work on "Breakthrough" the Calliope article on the creative mind and inventions.

  • Each group will cut out a pea coat design an dissect the article. There are eight buttons on the pea coat. Can we button up our evidence and prove we understand the Big Idea of the article. Each button is like a bullet point

  • Someone Cut out or draw a pea coat on the big sheet of paper provided. Sign up for this job now. I need a name.

  • Someone Draw eight buttons. Most pea coat buttons have anchors on them! Anchors may symbolize anchoring our ideas. Sign up for this job, I need a name.

  • Brain Storm - this can happen while drawing and cutting occur. So ~ WHAT'S THE BIG IDEA? Please make a list as to what you think the big idea of the article is....all opionions matter, include all voices please. I need someone to be the scribe for this job. Sign up for this job, I need a name.

  • Final project for the class is to complete a a pea coat that suits our comprehension skills. Evidence and examples are your buttons. Please button up that coat, it is cold outside!

  • Use your Writing on Demand writing and graphic organizers to help you find your Big Idea and Evidence.

  • ALL JOBS/CONTRIBUTIONS ARE COLOR CODED. MAKE A KEY TO INDICATE WHAT COLOR MARKER YOU ARE USING TO DISSECT RESPONSE TO TEXT. 1.) Write THE BIG IDEA 2.) evidence from article (this is a quote from the article to back-up your big idea.) You can take this directly from the writing worksheet...you all got this right!  Copy it word for word. 2.) Make a personal connection. What invention makes your life easier? What inventions do you like/use? What have you invented.

  1. When this task is complete and approved you may fill out your pink reading log which is due Period 5 today.

  2. You may take an AR Quiz,

  3. or READ,

  4. or work on The Hunger Games PhotoStory3 script. I challenge you to learn how to create your own music and upload a Miti file, MP3 or other music for your movie. A voice over is mandatory. Write a scipt for approval!

Welcome Back! Hope you had an enjoyable break and a festive Thanksgiving celebration.

This week we will be finishing up a few response to literature projects. Everyone should have completed their MDH read and posting on YWP. I read your posts, commented on everyone's posts and graded your work. If you were able to post more, or would like to do so TODAY, then get to it and I will raise your current grade to reflect your improved effort.

If you are on track with the MDH YWP, then please proceed with The Hunger Games PhotoStory3 project. This digital storytelling project is meant to be fun and entertaining. Attached is the rubric Digital Story Rubric  so you will know what is expected in this response to literature. Please take out your Facebook Profile packet for The Hunger Games; jot down a few more ideas on the sheets to help refresh your memory and focus your creativity. The aim of the project is to promote analysis. This means to look a little deeper into what the author is trying to tell us. For example, we brained stormed as a group that Suzanne Collins chose the theme of survival so she continually gave examples of Katniss needing to hunt to feed her family and Gale's family. The cat survived a drowning. Peeta and Katniss survived the games. Yet, no everyone survived. How do these occurrences in the book help us understand theme and how WILL YOU import images into your video to show this?

Wednesday through Friday November 18, 2011

Reading Comprehension evidence is our learning goal for this week. Read and post to YWP.  Journal write consists of picking a passage from your Mary Downing Hahn book that shows your understanding of the book's theme. We'll take that writing and post it to the MDH Wiki. Please post during break if you didn't finish. Finish your book and bring it back after break.

I took the Pledge for teachers on The Race to Nowhere not to give homework over break. So please enjoy yourselves and read for enjoyment. Miss you already! : ) Ms. Melloni

The Hunger Games   DO NOW

Discussion of Theme: Write these notes down in your journal, write Theme in Table of Contents.

  • Theme is sometimes a difficult concept to grasp, but it is essential in literary analysis. The theme of a story is the central message

or idea. It says something about life, or about being human. Theme is what makes literature compelling and significant to readers.

  • Make a list of topics you think may be the theme of The Hunger Games.

  • The list of topics is merely topics. A theme is what a story says about a topic

  • Topic  +  Insight  =  Theme

  • I'll read a few more pages from chapter one and Chapter Two to refresh your memory and help with critical thinking.  Please let me know if any of you have a copy of the book at home that you can bring in to class.

List on the board topic ideas from The Hunger Games.

Write a theme statement: (copy this sentence started down then finish it) Suzanne Collins' The Hunger Games shows

that  _(choose one of the themes from  the list)_______________________.......

  • We'll share theme statements to check for understanding.

  • Now add two reasons or examples to support your theme statement. For example: The Hunger Games shows many different forms of ____________(theme)____, when ......
